About this type

Four 747-400s were sliced open and rebuilt with a swollen upper fuselage and a swing-open tail to ferry 787 sections between factories. It is one of the strangest silhouettes in the sky.

With only four in existence flying a fixed factory circuit, a Dreamlifter catch is pure schedule luck.

First flight: September 9, 2006.

The entire tail swings sideways to load cargo.

Officially the 747-400 Large Cargo Freighter.
