About this type

The P-3 Orion is a Lockheed Electra airliner reborn as a submarine hunter, its tail stinger a magnetic anomaly detector for finding steel hulls beneath the waves. It patrolled every ocean of the Cold War.

The survivors work hard: NOAA's hurricane hunters fly P-3s into the eyewall on purpose, and firefighting conversions drop retardant over the American West. Navies still fly it too.

First flight: November 25, 1959 (YP3V prototype).

The tail boom is a magnetic anomaly detector.

NOAA P-3s fly into hurricanes for a living.
